1. The deal
Tutorly is a marketplace connecting UK tutors with students and parents. We are not the tutor. Tutors are independent providers who set their own rates and keep 100% of them. We take no commission from tutors. Messaging and booking are unlocked by a £15/month learner membership (which also includes Tutorly Learn), and a 5% Tutorly Payments fee is added to each booking and paid by the student or parent, not deducted from the tutor.
By creating an account you agree to these terms. If you don't, please don't use the platform.
2. Membership
- The learner membership costs £15 per month, billed through Stripe, and renews automatically each month until cancelled.
- It unlocks messaging tutors, booking sessions, and full access to Tutorly Learn (lessons, practice, mocks, essay marking).
- You can cancel at any time from Settings via the billing portal. You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for; we don't refund part-months.
- If a renewal payment fails, we'll let you know and retry; membership access pauses until payment succeeds.
- We'll give at least 30 days' notice before any price change takes effect.
3. Eligibility
- There is no minimum age to learn on Tutorly. Under-18s are asked to link a parent or guardian account at sign-up; a session booked by an under-18 is not paid for or confirmed until their linked parent approves it.
- Tutors must be 18 or older and legally entitled to work in the UK.
- Tutors must have their qualifications verified by our team before being listed publicly. A DBS check is optional; where a tutor has one, their DBS status is shown on their profile.
4. Bookings & cancellations
- Where a parent account is linked, bookings for an under-18 need parent approval before payment.
- Cancel more than 24 hours before the start time: full refund, including the Tutorly Payments fee.
- Cancel within 24 hours of the start time: no refund. The tutor is paid in full for the reserved slot.
- If you don't attend a booked session, it is charged in full.
- If the tutor cancels, you are always refunded in full, whenever they cancel.
- If a payment goes through but the booking can't be confirmed (for example it expires first), it is automatically refunded in full.
5. Payments
Students or linked parents pay per session via Stripe. Payment is made directly to the tutor's connected Stripe account. Tutorly does not hold or control the tutor's funds. A 5% Tutorly Payments fee is added at checkout and paid by the student or parent. Tutors receive payouts to their UK bank account on Stripe's standard payout schedule.
VAT is included where applicable. Tutors are responsible for their own income tax and National Insurance.
6. Learn & AI features
- Tutorly Learn includes lessons, practice and mini-mocks that are marked by AI, and essay marking done by a real tutor you've booked with. Our privacy policy sets out what is sent to our AI provider.
- A tutor you book may see your recent practice signals (topics you've struggled with, stage-check results) so they can prepare your session. That's the point of the product; the details are in our privacy policy.
- Bao is an AI study assistant. It can make mistakes. It is a study aid, not a replacement for your tutor, your teacher, or professional advice, and its answers are not endorsed by your tutor.
- Learn content, including anything a tutor records about your progress, is guidance. We don't guarantee exam results.
7. Conduct
You must not:
- Move bookings or payments off-platform to avoid fees. This is a permanent ban.
- Share login credentials.
- Use the platform to harass, bully, or harm anyone.
- Misrepresent your qualifications or identity.
- Record sessions without the other party's explicit consent.
Breaches result in account suspension and may be reported to the relevant authorities.
8. Content
You keep ownership of anything you upload (bios, homework, photos). You grant us a licence to display it as needed to run the service. Tutors' public profile content may be shown in marketing.
9. Liability
Tutorly verifies tutor qualifications. We do not run an identity or criminal-records check on tutors, and a DBS check is optional and shown on each profile where a tutor has one. We do not employ tutors and do not guarantee outcomes. To the maximum extent permitted by law our liability is limited to the total fees you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot be excluded by UK law.
10. Closing your account
You can close your account at any time from Settings. Closing your account cancels your membership straight away, but doesn't refund the part-month you've already paid for. Money from past sessions already sits with the tutor's Stripe account and pays out on Stripe's normal schedule. Closing an account doesn't affect it.
11. Changes & law
We may update these terms with 30 days' notice for material changes. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.
